The Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER) of Switzerland has initiated administrative criminal proceedings against Ikea. The Swiss authorities are investigating the suspicion of repeated false declarations.

The investigation comes after the Swiss NGO Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF) has lodged a complaint against the local subsidiary of furniture giant Ikea and its CEO, Jessica Anderen, accusing them of violating Swiss wood declaration laws and deliberately misleading customers.

BMF’s research found that 80 items sold in five Ikea branches in Switzerland did not adequately indicate the origin of the timber as required under the country’s Wood Declaration Obligation.

The management of Ikea Switzerland rejects the allegations and emphasizes, however, that the specific allegations are about missing labels on the product in the furniture store. These were simply often lost and would be replaced as soon as possible. In addition, Ikea does not use any illegally felled wood.
