Greenpeace to discontinue its FSC membership

Greenpeace, a founding member of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), will discontinue its FSC membership. The main reason given is the sometimes very different implementation of FSC guidelines in some countries. Especially in so-called high-risk countries, Greenpeace regards the FSC certification as insufficient. High risk countries, are countries with a weak civil society, with structurally existing corruption and lack of legal protection of indigenous people.

Forest Certification, like FSC 100% forest management certified timber, can be a useful tool in conducting this due diligence. However, additional due diligence is often required, for example, when sourcing from regions where civil society institutions are weak, corruption is high, and/or High Conservation Values (HCVs) are not formally protected, and to ensure that No Deforestation, no Peatland and no Exploitation (NDPE) commitments are met. Greenpeace cautions against the use of weaker forest certification schemes like PEFC, which cannot guarantee either legality or minimum responsible forest management practices on the ground.

Greenpeace expects individuals as well as companies in general to reduce the consumption of the raw material wood and paper, together with the fullest possible reuse or recycling of wood and paper products.

In a first statement, FSC regrets the decision of Greenpeace International to end the long and fruitful cooperation. The possibility of further cooperation at national level is explicitly welcomed by FSC, and Greenpeace will continue to be a member of FSC in countries such as the US, Canada and New Zealand. The fact that the FSC will remain the only point of contact for Greenpeace in the field of forest and wood certification in the future is certain.
