Within the DACH region softwood lumber prices in June are still on the rise due to the high demand in China and USA but also within Europe for construction. Many countries are promoting wooden buildings for climate reasons. Sawmills are at limit, struggeling to get logs and can not expand easily due to a lack of staff and other reasons. All of that has led to historical price increases.

Fordaq members mention even a doubeling just since December when in April prices have allready been at 760 €/m3. The price index for lumber to be used in the pallet and wood packaging industry rose sharply in May by 16% compared to April – and by 87% year on year. Also contracts are valid only for about 24 hours in June. No one sees a market soothing opportunity before the end of this year but from 2022 on some can imagine a longer price stabilisation at a high mark.

Hardwood lumber is also still at high demand – especially oak for construction and flooring – and due to higher prices for the logs – as many logging capacities have been bound longer for beetle wood logging – also the lumber prices increase slowly.

No market soothing expected in the construction sector until Autumn

For construction wood and panels there are also much higher prices payed in June. For the pallet industry plywood prices rose by 17% and OSB by 32% compared to April. OSB doubled compared to May 2020 and is also not availible for new contracts until December 2021. The same occurs with CLT.

Structural solid timber (KVH) costs 500 to 800 €/m3, if availible at all and Gluelam had reached 660 €/m3 allready in April. The Austrian wood construction industry in general mentions construction wood prices four times higher than in January and expects a further price increase until autumn and then maybe maintaining the level, but no downward trend.

The German furniture industry, packaging and pallet industry face scarcities in raw materials like timber and panel.

Log prices finally slightly on the rise

The Log prices in the DACH region are finally joining the lumber on the rise – also due to the low availibility at the moment because the beetles are 4 weeks late which leeds – combined with logging restriction in Germany for healthy spruce (85% allowed for this year compared to previous) – to less harvesting activity for at least a few more weeks.

Beetle wood costs around 90€/m3 in June. Other qualities have passed the 100€/m3 mark in June in Austria finally. Spruce prices up to 120 €/m3 are possible.
