U.S. softwood and panel markets report - Week 14
08/04/2008 - 17:50

Framing lumber prices firmed unevenly, with studs and narrow random dimension still the focus of most buyers. Traders sensed a better balance between supply and demand, resulting largely from recent production curtailments but notable gains in sales as well. Milder weather in some regions helped spur buying at the retail level. However, weather continued to impede sales across much of the nation's midsection. Many buyers still wanted specific loads and items, but found it increasingly difficult to dictate tallies to the mills.

Structural panel markets were mixed. Another quiet week of trading left many OSB mills receptive to mild counters. Producers in some regions sought orders more aggressively to move order files beyond next week. Southern Pine plywood producers sold steadily for a second consecutive week. Many added a week or two to their order files, which reached into late April. Some traders described demand for western Fir plywood as anemic. But demand was sufficient to support modest price increases.
