U.S. softwood lumber production up 3.8%

U.S. sawmills produced 28.812 billion board feet (bbf) or 67,9 million cubic meters of softwood lumber in the first 11 months of 2014 – a gain of 3.8% from 27.765 bbf (65,5 million m3) a year earlier, according to the Western Wood Products Assn.’s monthly Lumber Track report.

Western U.S. sawmills accounted for 12.981 bbf (30,6 million m3) of the 11-month total, an increase of 3.7% from the 12.519 bbf (29,5 million m3) produced a year earlier, while Southern U.S. sawmills contributed 14.492 bbf (34,1 million m3)– up 3.8% year-over-year from 13.956 bbf (32,9 million m3).

In November alone, U.S. production was 2.100 bbf (4,9 million m3) – an 11.7% drop from 2.377 bbf (5,6 million m3) in November 2013, and 29.1% lower than output in October 2014 of 2.960 bbf (6,9 million m3).

Of November’s total, sawmills in the western U.S. contributed 1.016 bbf (2,3 million m3)- down 4.6% from 1.065 bbf (2,5 million m3) a year earlier, and 22.2% lower than October’s volume of 1.306 bbf (3 million m3). Mills in the South produced 986 million board ft. (mmbf) or 2,3 million m3 in November - a year-over-year drop of 17.9% from 1.201 bbf (2,8 million m3), and 35.0% below October’s output of 1.516 bbf (3,5 million m3), reported WWPA.

In the 11-month period, softwood lumber consumption in U.S. climbed 6.1% year-over-year to 36.794 bbf (86,8 million m3) from 36.565 bbf. (86,2 million m3).
