Demand for wood pellets in Sweden increased by 20 percent or 330,000 tonnes in 2013, as the Swedish Bionergy Association (Svebio) reports. This is a sharp turnaround compared to 2012 when the market fell by 560,000 tonnes.

On a yearly basis, pellet production in Sweden rose by 10%, or 140,000 tonnes in 2013, says Svebio. Imports surged by 45% or 220,000 tonnes, while exports declined 17 percent or 33,000 tonnes.

Output growth in the Swedish pellet plants is clear. The entire 27 factories increased their output in 2013. 30 factories registered unchanged production and only eight factories reduced their production, says Anders Haaker, executive editor of the magazine Bioenergy, quoted by Svebio.

Some of the pellet factories which increased production the most, include Neova in Forsnäs-38 000 tonnes; Neova Vaggeryd-19 000 tonnes; Forssjö Pellets- 27 000 tonnes; Helsinge Pellets-20 000 tonnes and Falu Energi-18,000 tonnes.
